In the book Max the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick it shows a theme of perseverance. In the book it shows Maxwell Kne, the depressed giant of a boy that was walking home in misery after his friend Freak died. When he heard a ear piercing screech, were he saw a little girl screaming at a goon to give her back her stuff. Max even though not wanting to saves the girls stuff and leaves her be. Well done after they meet again and Max learns that Worm has an abusing stepfather that does things to his wife and Rachel, Worms real name. When the Undertaker takes Worm and her mother, Max does all in his power to stop him, even if it meant busting down the door and taking her by brute force. When he escapes with her and backyard hoped to his Grams backyard, he was to late for the police. That were interviewing his Gram about the kidnapping. But Gram denied that her grandson would do any of that, and when the cops left, Worm and Max made a run for it.
Worm and Max had to leave and hitched a ride on a train were they met Hobo Joe who helped them to beans and other nice foods until they found the train to Chivalry and had to leave Joe, and when they got to chivalry. Max gave up hope but Worm didn't. Worm thought he would be in the railway station but Max found a sign that he would never be found. But the Undertaker found them and they had to run. Until they got to the end, where they had a surprise. Hippy Dippy and Max's grandpa were saving them. Until they could not escape. And Worm ran back into the mine… she tossed her miners helmet down the hole, and the cave started to collapse and they heard help from the Undertaker and Max saved him but at a cost he got buried and barely survived.
